Have you had a fire in your Evansville Indiana home?
We have worked with many different types of commercial and residential fires. Everything from large kitchen fires that required a total gut of the house, to a lawn mower catching on fire in a garage resulting in us cleaning all of the homeowners content, to outdoor grill fires that have left smoke damage on the homeowners brick on the outside of his home.
When we get a call about a fire we first send our production manager out to get eyes on the damage. Our production managers are our priority responders and they are usually the first person from SERVPRO to see the damage and they instruct techs on what to do from there.
Our techs pre-test soot, because not all soot can be cleaned the same way. We also pre-test items to see if they can be cleaned or if they need to be replaced.
We use a pack out system where photos of the item are take and assigned with a tagged number. We can log what day we tagged and packed up that item, what day the item was cleaned and then what day the item was delivered back to the homeowner.
Depending on the item and the severity of the item it will not be cleaned on site. Contents are taken to our warehouse where they are cleaned and Ozoned to help remove any lingering smoke scent items are then stored in our warehouse until they are ready to be returned to the homeowner.

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of West Evansville will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:
Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber
- Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood
- Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.
Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire
- Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Have you had a Fire in your Evansville Indiana Home?
7/16/2020 (Permalink)
Most people have heard that you should document all of the items in your home. But very few people do it. The reason is for insurance purposes. If you were to have a fire, you would have pictures and documentation on your items. It would be extremely challenging to try and remember every single item you have in your home.
As homeowners we put a lot of sentimental value on our personal items. After a major fire damage the thought of replacing everything you love can be overwhelming. SERVPRO of West Evansville has the training to restore your personal items instead of replacing them. But what can you do until help arrives?
Here are some tips on how you can help after a fire damage.
- Limit movement in the house to prevent soot particles from spreading and causing additional damage.
- DO NOT wash any walls or painted services.
- DO NOT shampoo carpet or upholstery.
- DO NOT send clothing to a dry cleaner. With fire damage certain steps need to be taken to ensure that smoke odor does not set into clothing.

Stay Safe while using Space Heaters
1/2/2020 (Permalink)
As a child, my parents were always hesitant to use space heaters. As an adult, I have adopted the behavior and we do not use them in our home.
Some homes have no other choice but to use space heaters, we understand that. So we wanted to write a blog to give you some tips for safety while using them.
1. Space heaters can ignite fires if they come into contact with combustible items. Be sure that the heaters should be situated at least 3 feet away from combustible items (curtains, rugs, papers, furniture such as sofas or beds, and clothes).
2. They should also be kept on flat surfaces, and not kept in walkways (to prevent bumping into the heater and knocking it over).
3. Always check to make sure that it has not been damaged in any way (including frayed cords, cracks, loose plugs).
4. Never leave your space heater unattended while it is in use.
