- The average tornado moves southwest to northeast, but tornadoes have been known to move in any direction.
- The average forward speed of a tornado is 30 miles per hour, but may vary from stationary to 70 miles per hour.
- Tornadoes can accompany tropical storms and hurricanes as they move onto land.
- Tornadoes are most frequently reported east of the Rocky Mountains during spring and summer months.
- Tornadoes are most likely to occur between 3:00pm and 9:00pm.

- Create an emergency kit with a battery-powered radio, battery-powered clock, manual can opener, flashlights, candles, extra batteries, matches, a first-aid kit, a fire extinguisher, bottled water and non-perishable food. Remember that flashlights are safer to use than candles
- Be prepared for power outages and have all cellphones charged
- Only use your phone for emergencies
- Stay indoors and away from windows
- Check that loose items such as outdoor settings, umbrellas and trampolines are safely secured.
- Park your car undercover and away from trees
- Protect your pets
- Have an emergency plan in place if you were to get separated

Storms can be a quite scary thing, keeping safe DURING the storm is the most important thing you can do. But AFTER the storm can also be important! Check out some tips we have below:
After The Storm:
- Never drive through a flooded roadway.
- Stay away from storm-damaged areas to keep from putting yourself at risk from the effects of severe thunderstorms.
- Continue to listen to a NOAA Weather Radio or to local radio and television stations for updated information or instructions, as access to roads or some parts of the community may be blocked.
- Help people who may require special assistance, such as infants, children and the elderly or those with access or functional needs.
- Stay away from downer power lines and report them immediately.
- Watch your animals closely. Keep them under your direct control.

Did you know that 51.5% of US homes have the recommended emergency kit in their home or car. Even less have food stored up for an emergency.
The American Red Cross encourages that each household and car have a preparedness kit. It is always better to be more prepared than less prepared. Many people from our team learned this during the break out of COVID-19.
The top items in an emergency kit should be:
- water
- canned food
- can opener
- flashlights
- batteries
- enough food and water for each person in your household for 5 days.

A Clogged Downspout could Cause Flooding!

What is a downspout?
A downspout is a pipe that carries rainwater from a roof to the ground. For a downspout to work correctly it must be functioning correctly. Leaves and yard debris can end up causing plugs and clogs in downspouts leading them to back up and not drain as intended. If you see signs of pooling and puddles make sure to clean out and clear out your downspouts to eliminate the blockage and lessen your chances of flooding from rainwater.

Are you prepared for a tornado?

Every household should have an emergency plan in place before a disaster strikes. Being prepared means having a stocked, and ready to go emergency preparedness kit.
Things you will want to include in an emergency preparedness kit are usually things for you will need to survive for at least 72 hours. Make sure to keep an emergency kit stocked and ready for an emergency in home. Here is a quick check list of items that you may want to keep in your emergency preparedness kit. Most of these items are easy to find and inexpensive:
Water – 1 gallon of water per person per day for at least 3 days
-Food – Non-perishable food for at least 3 days
-Manual can opener for food
-Flashlight
-Batteries
-Hand crank radio or battery powered radio
-First aid kit
-Whistle
-Matches
-Dust Mask
-Local Maps
-Cell phone with chargers and a backup battery
-Prescription medications
-Infant formula, diapers, wipes, bottles
